Diplomatic Tensions Propel Surge in Beach Destination Searches, Lakshadweep in Spotlight
Amidst the ongoing diplomatic tensions between India and Maldives, numerous travel portals are experiencing an unprecedented surge in searches for the country’s beach destinations, including Lakshadweep. Make My Trip, an online travel company, revealed in a statement that, alongside the heightened curiosity about Lakshadweep, searches for Daman, another popular beach destination, have soared by more than 350 percent. The escalation of the row followed derogatory remarks made by the now-suspended Maldives deputy minister and other cabinet members about Prime Minister Modi’s recent visit to Lakshadweep.
“We are currently witnessing an all-time high in on-platform searches for beach destinations in the country. Searches for the top beach destinations across the country have doubled in the last couple of days. In addition to the heightened interest in Lakshadweep, Daman has experienced a remarkable increase in searches by over 350 percent, followed by Andamans, which has seen an overall search volume surge of over 120 percent,” stated Make My Trip.
The statement further listed other destinations experiencing robust double-digit growth, including Kochi, Gokarna, Puri, Visakhapatnam, Varkala, Puducherry, Goa, and various beaches in Tamil Nadu and Kerala. Travel agents reported a sudden influx of inquiries about beach destinations in the past two days, an unusual occurrence for this season.
Rajeev Kale, President and Country Head of Holidays, MICE, Visa at Thomas Cook (India) Limited, remarked, “Following the Prime Minister’s recent visit to Lakshadweep and his encouragement for Indians to explore domestic islands, we have observed an increase in searches for both domestic islands and beach destinations. Our search data for Lakshadweep indicates a significant surge of over 950 percent compared to December, with similar trends observed for destinations such as Andamans, Goa, Kerala’s Kovalam, Daman, and Diu, acting as clear catalysts for Domestic Tourism.”
Daniel D’Souza, President & Country Head of Holidays at SOTC Travel, emphasized, “The Prime Minister’s initiative to inspire Indians to explore our country’s less-explored gem, Lakshadweep, and its pristine islands, has successfully garnered significant attention and interest. The island destination has become the most searched destination globally today, with our search data indicating a surge of almost 200 percent on our portal for Lakshadweep cruise sailings.”
“We anticipate that this surge in interest and demand will encourage authorities to strengthen the infrastructure in the destination and establish direct connectivity to boost tourism,” he added.
