Devendra Fadnavis Advocates for Forest Conservation Amid Development
Maharashtra’s Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis emphasized the importance of forest conservation, countering allegations of deforestation for developmental projects.
Refuting Allegations of Deforestation
Responding to former CM Uddhav Thackeray’s claims that the state government is compromising forest cover in the name of development, Fadnavis firmly stated that saving forests is unquestionable.
Highlighting Maharashtra’s Forest Growth Record
Fadnavis highlighted that during his tenure as Maharashtra’s Chief Minister (2014-2019), the state saw an increase in forest coverage, a claim supported by the 2020 report from the country’s forest department.
Comparative Forest Cover Data
According to the Forest Survey Report 2021, while Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, and Odisha showed the most significant increases in forest cover, Maharashtra also featured prominently in terms of extensive forest coverage, alongside Madhya Pradesh, Arunachal Pradesh, and Chhattisgarh.
