Jammu and Kashmir National Conference Vice President, Omar Abdullah, raised a resounding voice of concern over the lack of democracy in the region, accusing the central government of depriving Jammu and Kashmir of its democratic rights. Speaking at a one-day delegate session in Surankote, Poonch, on Thursday, he passionately lamented that while India proudly proclaims itself as the world’s largest democracy, the same democracy seems to elude the people of Jammu and Kashmir.
A Decade of Democracy Drought in J&K
Omar Abdullah highlighted a significant democratic shortfall in the region, emphasizing that it has been nearly a decade since the last Assembly elections were held in 2014. He pointed out that the people of Jammu and Kashmir are united in their fervent desire to restore democracy, but the authorities in power appear unwilling to acknowledge the gravity of the situation. In a statement to the press, he asserted that it’s high time for a democratic resurgence in the region.
Anti-People Policies and Persecution
Omar Abdullah didn’t shy away from addressing what he saw as anti-people policies of the Jammu and Kashmir administration. He criticized the imposition of hiked electricity bills, toll taxes, inflation, and ration curtailment as means of persecuting the people of the Union Territory. Omar questioned the installation of digital meters by the Power Development Department (PDD) and their subsequent replacement by smart meters.

He demanded accountability for the significant financial resources spent on these measures. He also highlighted the pressing need for accessible drinking water, deteriorating road conditions, and incomplete infrastructure projects, such as the road to Surankote. Omar expressed dismay at the government’s focus on opening numerous liquor shops while essential public services lag behind.
The Mother of Democracy Falters in Jammu and Kashmir
Omar Abdullah was unequivocal in his criticism of the government’s reluctance to conduct elections in Jammu and Kashmir. He drew attention to the paradox that while people in New Delhi proclaim India as the mother of democracy, the same love for democracy appears to wane when it comes to Jammu and Kashmir. He questioned the motives behind depriving J&K of its right to choose its own government and suggested that the BJP’s fear of election outcomes in the region might be a driving factor behind this decision.
Furthermore, Omar Abdullah noted that the transition to Union Territories had impacted the lives of government employees and daily wage earners adversely. Those who once welcomed the change now struggle to access their General Provident Fund (GP) for essential needs like their children’s weddings or emergencies. He emphasized that the promises made to the underprivileged sections of society are largely hollow, leaving them to bear the brunt of inadequate government support.
