Delta Air Lines Orders Up to 40 Airbus A350-1000 Jets in Fleet Upgrade

Delta Air Lines has announced an order for up to 40 new Airbus A350-1000 widebody aircraft, with deliveries of the initial 20 scheduled to begin in 2026. The order, making Delta the potential first U.S. carrier to operate this model, includes options for an additional 20 planes.

The A350-1000, designed for long-range travel, can accommodate 350 to 410 passengers and offers ample space for premium cabins. Delta CEO Ed Bastian mentioned that these planes will replace the older Boeing 767s in the airline’s fleet. Delta, known for positioning itself as a premium airline, has been focusing on attracting travelers willing to pay for enhanced services, particularly in premium cabins.

While Delta had previously ordered 100 Boeing 737 MAX 10 jets in 2022, it has predominantly been an Airbus customer. The addition of the A350-1000s is expected to enhance Delta’s international travel experience, offering more premium seats, higher gauge, and improved customer amenities.

Delta’s move to invest in the A350-1000s underscores the airline’s strategy to grow its network in the Asia-Pacific region, a market that has been slower to recover in global travel demand post-pandemic. The deal also includes a service agreement with Rolls-Royce to maintain the Trent XWB-97 engines powering the A350-1000 jets.

United Airlines is the only other U.S. carrier that has ordered the A350, with an order for the smaller A350-900s. However, none of these planes have been delivered yet. Globally, operators of the A350-1000 include British Airways, Qatar Airways, and Cathay Pacific Airways. Airbus recently reported record annual jet orders, maintaining its position as a top manufacturer against Boeing.
