Delhi High Court Admits Appeals in Saumya Vishwanathan Murder Case
The Delhi High Court has admitted four appeals challenging the conviction and double life sentence of journalist Saumya Vishwanathan’s murderers. Convicts Ravi Kapoor, Baljeet Singh Malik, Amit Shukla, and Ajay Kumar have moved the appeals against the trial court’s order. The court has issued notice to Delhi Police for February 12, regarding the applications seeking the suspension of sentence (bail) during the appeal process. The Nominal rolls of the convicts have been summoned from the Jail.
Convicts Seek Suspension of Sentence during Appeals
The counsel for Ravi Kapoor argued that he has been in custody for over 14 years. The convicted individuals were found guilty of murder and running a crime syndicate. The trial court had directed that the life sentences should be served consecutively. The appeals challenge the judgment of October 18, 2023, and sentences under various sections of the IPC and the Maharashtra Control of Organized Crime Act, 1999.
High Court Affirms Convictions in Organized Crime Syndicate Case
The High Court, in the judgment, noted that the prosecution had proven beyond a reasonable doubt that the accused were involved in criminal activities and were members of an organized crime syndicate. The court held that they murdered Saumya Vishwanathan on September 30, 2008, with the intention to rob her. The convicts’ sentences were upheld under various sections of the IPC and the MCOC Act. The court also affirmed the conviction of Ajay Sethi, who facilitated the organized crime syndicate.
