Defence Minister Rajnath Singh embarked on a visit to Rajouri and Jammu today to assess the security situation following the recent attack on army vehicles in Poonch, where four soldiers were martyred.

Last week, heavily armed terrorists ambushed two Army vehicles near Thanandi in the Rajouri sector, resulting in the tragic loss of four Army personnel and injuries to three others.

In anticipation of Minister Rajnath Singh’s visit, security measures in Jammu have been intensified.

Given the surge in attacks on Indian troops, the Indian Army is reportedly planning to bolster its presence in the Poonch-Rajouri sector to counter Pakistani terrorist activities. Sources suggest that an additional brigade-size formation was deployed a few months ago, and plans are underway to station another brigade along with supporting units to enhance counter-terrorism efforts.

This strategic move aims to fortify the counter-terrorist grid, instilling confidence in the local population. Concurrently, local police are reinforcing their intelligence network to address security concerns.

To address lapses in operations and casualties, a Staff Court of Inquiry is being conducted against the 13-Sector Rashtriya Rifles Commander, a Brigadier. The inquiry, led by a Major General-rank officer, will also investigate the deaths of three civilians held in custody after the Dera ki Gali terror attack.

Indian Army Chief Gen. Manoj Pande visited the Poonch-Rajouri sector and is expected to return with senior defense ministry officials later this week. During the visit, he received briefings from top commanders on ongoing operations and strategies to effectively target terrorists in the coming days.

Sources indicate that Pakistan’s military and intelligence agencies aim to revive terrorism in the Poonch-Rajouri sector to exert pressure on the Indian Army, potentially diverting resources from the northern border with China. The Indian Army has been engaged in a standoff with China for the past three years, focusing on the northern and eastern fronts since the 2020 Chinese aggression.

Despite these challenges, security forces have successfully reduced terrorist activities in the Kashmir valley.
