Cygnus X-1 Black Hole Emits Powerful Jets Equal to 10,000 Suns, Reveals Study
Apr 19 (VoM News): As per a study published in Nature Astronomy, it has been revealed that Cygnus X-1- the first confirmed black hole, is emitting the powerful “dancing jets” into space, which has an energy output equivalent to 10,000 suns.
Cygnus X-1- the first confirmed black hole was discovered in 1964 and was confirmed in 1971, is located about 7,000 light-years from Earth.
Cygnus X-1 remains one of the most extensively studied black holes so far.
A team of Researchers, led by Curtin University, used a global network of telescopes to analyse the behaviour of jets emitted by the black hole.
These jets, formed as matter accelerates near the black hole, were observed bending under the influence of stellar winds—helping scientists estimate their immense energy output.
The jets travel at nearly half the speed of light—around 150,000 kilometres per second and also generate brightness comparable to 10,000 suns, reveals the study.
Nearly 10 percent of the energy released as matter falls into the black hole is channelled into these jets, determines the scientists
The findings offer important observational confirmation of long-standing theoretical models, many of which are based on principles proposed by Albert Einstein.
Cygnus X-1 is a stellar-mass black hole roughly 21 times the mass of the Sun and exists in a binary system with a companion star, HDE 226868, orbiting each other every 5.6 days.
The research itself is a significant step in understanding how black holes release energy and influence their surrounding cosmic environments.
