COVID Subvariant JN.1 Cases Surge: AIIMS Doctors Advise Vigilance, Not Panic
Doctors from the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) responded to the recent upsurge in COVID subvariant JN.1 cases across multiple states, urging the public to remain cautious without succumbing to panic.
Emphasizing the mild symptoms exhibited by patients, Doctor Neeraj Nischal, an Additional Professor in the Department of Medicine at AIIMS Delhi, reassured citizens to maintain alertness amid the evolving situation.
Acknowledging the cyclic nature of virus mutations, Doctor Nischal highlighted the current subvariant’s less severe impact compared to its predecessors, like the delta variant.
He underscored this as a testament to our enhanced understanding and preparedness in combating the virus.
Citing the ongoing analysis of emerging data, Doctor Nischal indicated similarities between the new subvariant and the omicron strain regarding symptoms such as cough, cold, fever, and body aches.
The medical team is diligently investigating its potential impact on lung health, oxygen requirements, and hospitalization needs.
Despite witnessing localized outbreaks, the doctor emphasized that this shouldn’t be generalized for the entire country. He credited India’s robust surveillance system for identifying and containing the disease efficiently.
Clarifying the situation at AIIMS, Doctor Nischal noted that while they see cases during the winter season, it mirrors routine respiratory infections typical during this period.
He emphasized that there is no substantial surge in cases or severity beyond the usual winter ailments.
Reassuring the public, Doctor Nischal stated that hospitalizations, oxygen requirements, and mortality rates have not escalated significantly, reiterating the need for vigilance rather than panic.
He advised readiness for potential future increases in cases, emphasizing the prior successful handling of the disease as a testament to preparedness.
