Congress Parliamentary Party Calls Meeting Amid Parliamentary Tensions
A Congress Parliamentary Party (CPP) meeting is set to convene tomorrow morning at Parliament in the national capital. Scheduled to commence at 9:30 am, the session will be presided over by Congress Parliamentary Party Chairperson, Sonia Gandhi. This assembly arrives amidst escalating political tensions between the Opposition and the BJP-led central government, sparked by demands for Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s statement regarding the Parliament security breach.
The recent uproar in Parliament led to an extraordinary decision to suspend a total of 141 MPs, creating a significant rift. Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs, Arjun Ram Meghwal, presented the motion to suspend these members. The suspension included 49 opposition MPs, among them notable figures such as Farooq Abdullah, Supriya Sule, Dimple Yadav, and Shashi Tharoor, from the Lok Sabha. These members were suspended for the remainder of the winter session, adding to the 33 MPs suspended a day earlier due to alleged “misconduct.”
The initial chaos ensued over the opposition’s demand for a statement from Amit Shah concerning the Parliament security breach incident. The aftermath saw 78 MPs—33 from the Lok Sabha and 45 from the Rajya Sabha—suspended for the rest of the winter session.
As the suspension tally reaches 141, the winter session is heading towards its conclusion on December 22. The forthcoming CPP meeting assumes significance against this backdrop of parliamentary tensions and the escalating conflict between the ruling party and the Opposition.
