Congress Leader Shashi Tharoor Confident of Party’s Victory in Mizoram

Senior Congress leader Shashi Tharoor expressed confidence in his party’s prospects for forming the next government in Mizoram. Tharoor, who is a Lok Sabha MP from Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, asserted that Mizoram would be the first state in the Northeast where the Congress would return to power since 2014 when the BJP assumed power at the Centre. The Congress lost the last Congress-ruled state in the Northeast in 2018 when the Mizo National Front (MNF) came to power.

Celebrating Diversity and Opposing Uniformity

Tharoor emphasized that the Congress celebrates India’s diversity and strengths, not its weaknesses. The party opposes the idea of “one nation, one language, one code, and one culture,” advocating for unity while preserving diversity. Tharoor also criticized the BJP, noting its failure to deliver on promises made since 2014, such as depositing ₹15 lakh in bank accounts and creating 2 crore jobs.

Addressing Unemployment Challenges in Mizoram

Tharoor highlighted unemployment as one of the significant challenges facing Mizoram, with over 23% of the state’s youth seeking jobs remaining unemployed. He accused the MNF government of failing to fulfill its pre-election promise to generate employment, stating that it had only created 2,200 jobs in the past five years. Tharoor also pointed out that there are more than 4,100 vacancies in the state police alone.

Mizoram Assembly Elections on November 7

Elections for the 40-member Mizoram Assembly are scheduled to take place in a single phase on November 7, with vote counting set for December 3.
