Concerns Rise as 2000 Fish Die in Mansar-Lake, Prompting Wildlife Department Action
Residents of the Samba district are growing increasingly concerned over the ongoing and substantial loss of fish in the well-known Mansar Lake. According to reports from the Daily Excelsior, this concerning trend has persisted for the past four days, resulting in the death of approximately 2000 fish. The Wildlife Department is actively engaged in the removal of the deceased fish from the lake to prevent pollution and potential epidemics.
Locals, deeply troubled by the significant fish mortality, are speculating that a disease outbreak may be the cause of this alarming phenomenon. While Mansar Lake has experienced similar incidents in the past, the current high death toll has intensified fears within the community.
Bishamber Singh and Surinsar Mansar Range Officers from the Wildlife Department disclosed that the sudden demise of the fish began four days ago. Initially, the number of deceased fish was minimal, creating the impression that the situation might not escalate. However, the ongoing deaths prompted the Wildlife Department to alert the Fisheries Department, leading to the discovery that the fish had perished from consuming hailstones during the recent rains.
In response to the crisis, the Wildlife Department is diligently burying the deceased fish in pits at a safe distance to prevent the spread of diseases caused by the foul odor. The collaborative efforts aim to address the environmental impact and mitigate potential health risks associated with the loss of fish in Mansar Lake.
