On Wednesday, the Kashmir Valley continued to experience severe cold wave conditions and persistent fog, causing disruptions in normal activities. According to an official from the meteorological department, Srinagar reported a low temperature of minus 2.6°C, slightly lower than the previous night’s minus 3.0°C, and 0.5°C below the normal temperature for this time of the year in the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir.

Foggy conditions persisted across most parts of the Valley, including Srinagar, leading to reduced visibility and inconvenience for commuters. Qazigund, the gateway town of Kashmir, recorded a minimum temperature of minus 3.2°C, 0.9°C below the normal temperature.

Pahalgam, a renowned resort in south Kashmir, registered a low of minus 4.6°C, slightly above the previous night’s minus 4.7°C and 0.6°C above the normal temperature. Kokernag, also in south Kashmir, recorded a minimum temperature of minus 2.2°C, indicating a 0.5°C above-normal temperature.

In north Kashmir, Kupwara town recorded a low of minus 4.2°C, 1.7°C below the normal temperature. Meanwhile, Gulmarg, the famous skiing resort in north Kashmir, reported a low of minus 2.8°C, with the temperature being 3.4°C above normal.

Jammu, the winter capital of J&K, recorded a minimum temperature of 7.6°C, slightly above the previous night’s 7.4°C and 0.2°C above normal. Banihal recorded a low of 1.2°C, Batote 4.7°C, and Bhaderwah 1.8°C.

The Kashmir Valley is currently in the midst of ‘Chillai-Kalan,’ a 40-day harsh winter period that concludes on January 30. Following this, ‘Chillai-Khurd,’ a 20-day period from January 30 to February 19, and ‘Chillai-Bachha’ (baby cold), a 10-day period from February 20 to March 1, will follow.

The weather forecast indicates generally cloudy conditions with a possibility of light snow over isolated higher reaches in the next 24 hours. The meteorological official anticipates generally dry weather with moderate to dense fog over Central Kashmir, Plains of Baramulla, Ganderbal, and Pulwama until December 31. Starting from January 1-2, the weather is expected to be generally cloudy with the likelihood of light rain at isolated places, followed by generally cloudy weather with light rain/snow at scattered places on January 3-4.
