CNN Founder Ted Turner Dies at 87
WASHINGTON, MAY 07, [VoM News]: Ted Turner, the prominent media entrepreneur and philanthropist founded CNN and a pioneer of 24-hour television news, has died at an age of 87, as per the statements issued by Turner Enterprises and multiple international media outlets.
CNN was launched by Turned in 1980, reshaping global news broadcasting by introducing round-the-clock live television coverage.
The network gained worldwide prominence during the Gulf War through continuous reporting from conflict zones, setting a model later followed by other cable news channels.
Born in Cincinnati in 1938, Turner expanded his family’s billboard advertising business into a major media empire. He acquired an Atlanta television station that eventually evolved into the Turner Broadcasting System, which included channels such as TBS, TNT, Cartoon Network and Turner Classic Movies.
In 1996, Turner merged Turner Broadcasting with Time Warner and later became vice chairman of the company. He subsequently suffered major financial losses following the collapse of the AOL-Time Warner merger.
Beyond media, Turner was known for his involvement in sports and philanthropy. He owned the Atlanta Braves, Atlanta Hawks and the Atlanta Thrashers, and won the America’s Cup in 1977 as skipper of the yacht Courageous.
In 1998, Turner pledged $1 billion to establish the United Nations Foundation, supporting global initiatives related to climate, health and development. He later focused heavily on environmental conservation and wildlife preservation projects across the United States.
Turner was married to actress Jane Fonda from 1991 to 2001. He had publicly disclosed in 2018 that he was living with Lewy body dementia.
