CM Omar Abdullah Expands Jammu & Kashmir Cabinet, Four NC Legislators Inducted | Mubarak Gul & Abdul Majid Larmi Emotional
SRINAGAR, October 27, 2026 (VoM News): Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Tuesday expanded and reshuffled his Council of Ministers, inducting four National Conference (NC) legislators during a swearing-in ceremony administered by Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha at Lok Bhawan.
Senior legislators Ali Mohammad Sagar, Mir Saifullah, Shamima Firdous and Altaf Ahmad Wani, popularly known as Altaf Kaloo, took the oath of office and secrecy.
Sagar represents a constituency in Srinagar, Saifullah represents Trehgam, Firdous represents Habbakadal and Kaloo represents Pahalgam. Independent legislator Satish Sharma was dropped from the ministry.
The reshuffle triggered disappointment among some senior NC leaders who were left out. Abdul Majid Larmi questioned Kaloo’s induction, saying seniority and merit should have been considered.
Former minister Mubarak Gul also expressed dissatisfaction over his exclusion.
Newly inducted minister Mir Saifullah dismissed suggestions of a serious party rift, describing the NC as a family. Minister Javed Rana defended the leadership’s decision, while legislator Salman Ali Sagar said the limited number of ministerial positions required the party to balance regional representation.
Leader of the Opposition Sunil Sharma criticised the new ministry, alleging regional, religious and cultural imbalance.
Meanwhile, the Congress reiterated that it would remain outside the Council of Ministers until Jammu and Kashmir’s statehood is restored. Pradesh Congress Committee president Tariq Hameed Karra said the party would not compromise its stated position for a cabinet berth.
Congress MLA Irfan Hafiz Lone urged the government to prioritise public welfare, commitments to daily wagers and unemployed people, and the restoration of full statehood.
