CISF Takes Charge of Parliament Complex Security After Recent Breach

Following a security breach last week, the government announced a significant overhaul in the security arrangement of the Parliament complex. The Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) will now replace the Delhi Police for overseeing access to the complex, handling entry protocols, and conducting frisking of individuals.

According to a notification issued by the Home Ministry on Wednesday, the CISF will take over these responsibilities to enhance security within the complex. However, the Lok Sabha Secretariat will retain authority over security arrangements within the premises, while Delhi Police will continue safeguarding the outer perimeter.

This change aims to streamline security measures and avoid confusion arising from multiple agencies’ protocols. It follows a comprehensive security review directed by the Home Ministry after the recent breach.

The CISF, known for providing security cover to sensitive public sector entities, presently secures over 350 critical locations, including airports and nuclear facilities.

The breach on December 13 involved two individuals gaining access to the Lok Sabha’s visitor gallery using passes issued by a BJP MP’s office. They set off yellow smoke canisters within the chamber, causing a significant security alert. Meanwhile, two others unleashed similar smoke canisters outside the complex.

Authorities have arrested all four individuals and are currently interrogating them. The incident has sparked a political uproar, with the opposition seeking accountability from Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government.

In response to the breach, the government announced stricter entry protocols, segregated entrances for different groups, and plans for installing body scanners and reinforced glass enclosures for the visitors’ gallery to prevent similar incidents in the future.

This incident occurred on the 22nd anniversary of the attack on the old Parliament building, underscoring the urgency to fortify security measures within such sensitive areas.
