New Delhi: The absence of President Xi Jinping from the annual G20 summit in New Delhi this weekend has raised eyebrows, leaving many wondering about China’s intentions and future engagements on the global stage.
China’s Explanation Sought.
A U.S. official has called upon China to provide an explanation for President Xi Jinping’s absence from the G20 summit in New Delhi. The summit was anticipated to offer an opportunity for a potential meeting between Xi and U.S. President Joe Biden, as both countries sought to repair strained relations due to trade and geopolitical tensions. Jon Finer, the U.S. deputy national security adviser, emphasized that it is the Chinese government’s responsibility to clarify whether their leader would participate or not. While the United States often finds itself having to explain China’s actions, this time the tables have turned. Finer stressed that it would be unfortunate if China was not committed to the success of the G20 summit.
Speculations on China’s Intentions.
Some analysts have speculated that China’s absence from the G20 summit may indicate its shift towards building an alternative world order, possibly favoring groupings like the BRICS. Premier Li Qiang is heading China’s delegation in New Delhi. Notably, Russia’s President Vladimir Putin is also missing from the summit, with Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov representing the nation instead.
Biden’s Reaction and Commitment.
U.S. President Joe Biden, who arrived on Friday for the summit, expressed his disappointment at Xi’s absence but remained hopeful for a future meeting. India, as the chair of the summit, along with Brazil, South Africa, and the United States, has shown unwavering commitment to the event’s success. Jon Finer emphasized that if China does not share the same commitment, it would be unfortunate for everyone involved, particularly China itself.
Future Implications.
China’s absence from the G20 summit in New Delhi raises questions about its evolving global role and priorities. As world leaders gather to address pressing global issues, including economic recovery and climate change, China’s position in the international community is under scrutiny. The absence of both China and Russia, two major players in global affairs, has added complexity to the summit’s dynamics. Whether this marks a strategic shift in China’s foreign policy or a temporary setback remains to be seen.
