
Chief Justice of India Advocates Balanced Cooperation Between Executive and Judiciary.
In a notable address at the ‘International Lawyers Conference 2023’ in Delhi, Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud underscored the importance of maintaining a balanced and cooperative relationship between the executive and the judiciary. He emphasized that while the Constitution delineates the roles of the legislature, executive, and judiciary, there is also room for mutual learning and cooperation among these branches of government.
Justice Chandrachud drew upon the wisdom of French philosopher Blaise Pascal to emphasize his point, stating, “Justice without power is inefficient. Justice and power must be brought together, so that whatever is just may be powerful, and whatever is powerful may be just.” He noted that this convergence of justice and power is currently underway.
The Chief Justice elaborated on the significance of the International Lawyers Conference as a valuable platform for knowledge exchange and education. He highlighted the presence of judges, lawyers, and jurists from around the world and expressed optimism about the positive outcomes of discussions surrounding the challenges in the field of justice delivery.Justice Chandrachud also highlighted the importance of engagement between nations, institutions, and individuals, which he believes holds the key to finding innovative solutions.
He noted that the decisions of the Indian Supreme Court are regularly cited and relied upon by foreign courts, underscoring the global impact of India’s legal jurisprudence.Reflecting on India’s diverse background and collaborative efforts, cheif Justice Chandrachud referenced the drafting of the Indian Constitution and the recent bipartisan cooperation that led to the passage of the Women’s Reservation Bill in Parliament.The ‘International Lawyers Conference 2023,’ organized by the Bar Council of India, revolves around the theme ‘Emerging Challenges in Justice Delivery System.’
This landmark event serves as a platform for meaningful dialogue and discussion on various legal topics of national and international significance. It aims to foster the exchange of ideas and experiences, promote international cooperation, and enhance understanding of legal issues.
