CATL unveils EV battery with 15-year lifespan and 932,000-mile range

Aleading Chinese firm has unveiled an electric bus battery that has the longest service life.

Launched by Contemporary Amperex Technology Co Ltd (CATL), the battery has a 15-year lifespan. The company also claims that the battery has a life of 932,000 miles (1.5 million kilometers).

Called Tianxing B-series battery, the energy storage device is claimed to be a tailor-made solution for the electric bus industry.

Battery can withstand 72 hours of water immersion

This latest offering is from CATL’s commercial vehicle battery brand, Tectrans or Tianxing.

With an IP69 rating, the battery can reportedly withstand 72 hours of water immersion.

The company has entered into collaborations with 13 vehicle companies and the Tianxing B-series battery could enter into mass production soon.

Also known as the world’s largest power battery maker, CATL had a 37.6 percent global share in the industry between January and July.

CATL increased its efforts in commercial vehicle battery market

In July, CATL unveiled its commercial vehicle battery brand, Tectrans, along with two L-series commercial vehicle batteries for the logistics and distribution industry. The two batteries include a version that supports supercharging, capable of reaching a 60 percent charge in a mere 12 minutes, as well as a long-range version, as reported by CNEV Post.

After dominating the passenger car battery market, CATL has intensified its efforts in the commercial vehicle battery market.

The company claims that the battery will have an energy density of 175 Wh/kg, setting a new benchmark in the electric bus industry.

Tectrans, the commercial vehicle brand of the company, was launched in July. It incorporates CTP (Cell to Pack) 3.0 technology and optimized topological structure, significantly enhancing grouping efficiency.

It implements dual-layer large-surface liquid cooling. With super high energy density and efficient thermal management, the products have dramatically improved range performance and reduced battery weight.

CATL has vigorously promoted its four advanced technologies – super safety, super-fast charging, super-long service life, and super-long range – in the new energy commercial vehicle industry. The development of CATL TIANXING can meet the needs of commercial vehicle users with regard to long battery service life, high efficiency and high profitability.

“As commercial vehicle industry ushers in a golden period of development, CATL TIANXING will be committed to maximizing the value of the commercial vehicle industry through technological innovation. We believe that true value breakthroughs in the commercial vehicle market center on the user experience,” said Wu Kai, chief scientist of CATL, in July.
