Brazilian President’s Holocaust Comparison Sparks Diplomatic Tensions
Brazil’s President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva’s comparison of Israel’s military actions in Gaza to the Holocaust has triggered a diplomatic dispute.
Israel declared Lula “persona non grata,” and Brazil recalled its ambassador from Tel Aviv. Lula’s remarks, describing the conflict as “genocide” akin to Hitler’s actions against Jews, drew strong criticism from Israeli officials and others.
The diplomatic fallout adds tension ahead of the G20 foreign ministers’ meeting in Rio de Janeiro.
Lula’s comments have faced condemnation and accusations of fueling anti-Semitism, while some political allies defended his focus on civilian victims in the conflict.
