The political landscape of Jammu and Kashmir faces a daunting challenge as the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is accused of evading assembly and other elections, in the wake of anticipated defeat, prompted by its perceived failures since coming into power in 2014.
BJP’s Fearful Retreat from Electoral Battles
Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) currently finds itself at the mercy of bureaucracy, with the BJP aiming to centralize control from the nation’s capital. Despite claims of normalcy, J&K Pradesh Congress Committee Chief, Vikar Rasool Wani, highlighted how elections are being postponed, leaving the region’s future uncertain.
Democratic Rights Denied: An Electoral Stalemate
While addressing a sizeable gathering of party workers in Doda, Wani explained that despite the reorganization of the former princely state and assurances of development and normalcy, assembly elections remain deliberately postponed. This has resulted in the people of J&K being deprived of their democratic rights, plunging them into a state of suffering due to the absence of a popular government.
BJP’s Challenged Commitment to Democracy
It appears that the BJP-led government at the center is hesitant to nurture democracy in J&K. The union territory grapples with unprecedented challenges due to the policies set in motion by the BJP. A wide gulf has emerged between the administration and the common populace, as grievances fall on deaf ears. Despite lofty claims of development, employment, and prosperity, the stark reality is that the common people are experiencing economic setbacks.

Congress Voices Concern for Democracy
Wani emphasized that the people of J&K desire prompt elections to restore their democratic rights. However, the BJP is accused of employing diversionary tactics and making false statements about development to avoid elections. The Congress Party expresses deep concern for the democratic rights of the people, which it perceives as being under assault during the BJP’s rule.
The Toll of Failed Policies and Economic Distress
Raman Bhalla, JKPCC Working President, laid bare the local developmental issues faced by the people of J&K. He criticized the BJP government for intimidating the populace through various anti-people measures, such as imposing toll taxes and introducing smart meters. This, along with severe joblessness, has contributed to economic distress among the common citizens of J&K.
Both the central and J&K governments are accused of displaying insensitivity to the welfare of the region’s people. In this complex and evolving political scenario, leaders of the JKPCC, including Naresh Gupta, Sham Lal Baghat, Sheikh Mujeeb, Sheikh Rayaz, Dina Nath Bhagat, Javed Lone, Vijay Hiteshi, and Tariq Sheikh, have united to address the mounting concerns, vowing to fight for the restoration of democracy and the rights of the people of Jammu and Kashmir.
