Apple Surpasses Samsung in Global Smartphone Sales for 2023, Ending Samsung’s Reign Since 2010
Apple has emerged as the top global smartphone vendor in 2023, surpassing Samsung for the first time since 2010, as reported by market research firm IDC. This shift in leadership is attributed to the growing popularity of premium iPhone models and competitive trade-in offers by the Cupertino-based tech giant. Despite an overall 3.2 percent year-on-year (YoY) decline in global smartphone shipments in 2023, the last quarter witnessed an 8.5 percent YoY growth, hinting at a potential recovery in 2024. Xiaomi secured the third position, while Chinese brands like Oppo and Transsion Holdings completed the top five.
According to IDC’s Worldwide Quarterly Mobile Phone Tracker, the challenging macroeconomic environment and elevated inventory contributed to the 3.2 percent YoY drop in global smartphone shipments, totaling 1.17 billion units in 2023. However, the fourth quarter of the same year experienced a positive turnaround with a 8.5 percent YoY growth, amounting to 326.1 million shipments. Apple claimed the leading position in global smartphone sales for the first time, capturing a 20.1 percent market share by shipping 234.6 million units. Samsung closely followed with 226.6 million units and a 19.4 percent market share. Xiaomi secured the third spot with 145.9 million units and a 12.5 percent market share, while Oppo and Transsion took the fourth and fifth positions.
In the last quarter of 2023, Apple maintained its lead with a 24.7 percent market share, followed by Samsung, Xiaomi, Transsion, and Vivo in the top five. Notably, this marks the first time in 13 years, since 2010, that Samsung has not held the top position in the smartphone market. Apple’s success is attributed to the growing trend of premium devices and interest-free financing plans. Despite challenges such as increased regulatory scrutiny and competition from Huawei in China, Apple demonstrated positive annual growth.
Although global smartphone shipments declined in 2023, the market is anticipated to rebound in 2024 with the introduction of new devices and increased diversity among Android players. Ryan Reith, Vice President of IDC’s Worldwide Mobility and Consumer Device Trackers, highlighted the evolving landscape within the Android space, with Huawei making strides in China and other brands like OnePlus, Honor, Google, and more launching competitive devices in the higher mid-range segment. The emergence of foldable phones and the growing focus on AI capabilities indicate upcoming competitive trends in the market.
In a separate development, Apple unveiled its inaugural mixed reality headset, the Apple Vision Pro, at the WWDC 2023 conference. Alongside new Mac models and upcoming software updates, these announcements were discussed on Orbital, the Gadgets 360 podcast, available on various platforms including Spotify, Gaana, JioSaavn, Google Podcasts, Apple Podcasts, and Amazon Music.
