Anticipated Light Snowfall Brings Relief to Dry Spell in Kashmir Amidst Weakened Western Disturbances
In the midst of the prolonged dry spell prevailing in Kashmir, the weather forecast points towards the possibility of light snowfall in the higher regions of the valley on Friday night, courtesy of “feeble Western Disturbances.”
An official from the Meteorological department indicated that these disturbances are anticipated to influence Jammu and Kashmir on both January 12 and January 17. The weakened Western Disturbance raises the likelihood of light snowfall in prominent tourist destinations like Sonamarg and Ganderbal in central Kashmir, as well as other elevated areas such as Dras in Ladakh.
The forecast indicates a 40 percent chance of precipitation in these areas. Likewise, regions including Gurez, higher elevations of Kupwara and Bandipora in north Kashmir, Pahalgam in south Kashmir, and the Kargil district in Ladakh have a 25-30 percent chance of experiencing snowfall due to the Western Disturbances.
Notably, there is a 15-20 percent chance of snowfall in the renowned ski resort of Gulmarg in Baramulla district, higher elevations of Anantnag in south Kashmir, and Leh in Ladakh. The ongoing dry winter in Kashmir has led to disappointment among locals and tourists alike, impacting winter sports in Gulmarg and potentially posing challenges for the local agriculture sector in the future. The local meteorological department attributes the prolonged dry spell to El Nino, characterized by the warming of the ocean surface.
