- ACB intervened after the complainant reported the incident.
The Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) arrested Ruman Qayoom, a Patwari from Halqa Mujgund in Srinagar, while accepting a bribe of Rs 50,000. According to the ACB’s official statement, they received a written complaint from an individual who alleged that Qayoom had demanded Rs 1 lakh for facilitating the registration stamp duty and issuance of revenue extracts related to a two-kanal land purchase.
After negotiations between the complainant and the Patwari, the bribe amount was settled at Rs 50,000, which was to be paid in two instalments. The first instalment was to be Rs 50,000, with the remaining amount to be paid after the completion of the task. However, instead of paying the bribe, the complainant reported the matter to the ACB.
Upon receiving the complaint, the ACB discreetly verified the allegations, confirming that the accused had indeed made the illegal demand. Following this confirmation, the ACB registered a case under FIR number 22/2024, invoking Section 7 of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988, and initiated a formal investigation.
A special trap team was then set up to catch Qayoom in the act. The team successfully apprehended him while he was accepting the bribe amount.
The accused was taken into custody after completing all necessary legal formalities. The investigation into the case is ongoing, and further details are expected to emerge as the inquiry continues.
