During a recent episode of Kaun Banega Crorepati 15, the venerable host and Bollywood legend, Amitabh Bachchan, presented a challenging question about his fellow actor, Helen. The contestant, Lalit Kumar, found himself unable to answer the question, ultimately settling for a prize of ₹12,50,000 instead of the potential ₹25 lakh.

The question posed by Amitabh Bachchan to Lalit was, “Which of these actresses was born in Myanmar and later escaped with her family to India during the Second World War?” The options provided were Sulochana, Suraiya, Nadira, and Helen. Unfortunately, Lalit opted to quit the game as he couldn’t provide the correct answer, prompting Amitabh to reveal that the right choice was Helen.

Amitabh went on to share the remarkable story of Helen and her family’s escape from Myanmar (formerly Burma) during the Second World War. He described the arduous journey they undertook, trekking through miles of wilderness, crossing rivers, mountains, and forests to reach safety in India in 1943, escaping the Japanese occupation of Burma. Despite the challenges, Helen eventually became a beloved actress in the Indian film industry, captivating audiences with her mesmerizing dance performances.

Reflecting on his personal experiences, Amitabh revealed that he had the privilege of working with Helen in a few films. He spoke warmly of her as a kind and compassionate woman who cared for everyone around her. Amitabh expressed his well wishes for her health, acknowledging that she is now 85 years old, while he himself is 81. The duo had collaborated on notable films such as Mohabbatein, Don, Amar Akbar Anthony, The Great Gambler, and Ram Balram.

A particular highlight of their on-screen chemistry was their iconic appearance in Asha Bhosle’s song “Yeh Mera Dil Yaar Ka Diwana” in Chandra Barot’s 1978 cult action thriller, Don. Their final collaboration occurred in Aditya Chopra’s 2001 romantic film Mohabbatein, where they portrayed principals of neighboring high schools.

Looking ahead, Helen is set to grace the screen once again in Abhinay Deo’s thriller series, Brown. Beyond her illustrious career, she is known for her marriage to veteran screenwriter Salim Khan and her role as the stepmother of Bollywood actor Salman Khan.
