Amit Shah: New Criminal Justice Laws Embrace Technology for Swift Justice
Home Minister Amit Shah highlighted the emphasis on technology and India’s legal history in the implementation of three new criminal justice laws during the Rajya Sabha debate. Shah assured that with the enactment of these laws, the country would integrate significant technological advancements into its criminal justice system, aiming to expedite justice delivery.
In response to the discussion on bills intending to replace the Indian Penal Code (IPC), Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC), and Indian Evidence Act, Shah noted that these laws would ensure an end to prolonged delays in justice, famously characterized by the phrase ‘tareekh pe tareekh’. He stressed that these reforms aim to conclude cases within three years.
The Home Minister highlighted the inclusion of a definition of terrorism in the new bills. He emphasized that these changes are significant as they bring an evolution to the nearly 150-year-old criminal justice system. Shah underscored the infusion of technology into India’s legal framework, suggesting that the country’s system will lead in technological integration.
Furthermore, Shah pointed out the transformation in priorities within the updated laws. He highlighted the shift from safeguarding the Treasury and the British Crown in the older laws to a focus on crimes against women in the new legislation. Shah also mentioned the replacement of the section on sedition with treason.
He concluded by reaffirming that the bills had undergone comprehensive deliberations since 2019, inclusive of scrutiny by the standing committee, signifying a detailed and consultative process in their formulation.
