Amit Shah Criticizes Congress’ Stance on Article 370, Predicts Electoral Losses
Home Minister Amit Shah took a swipe at the Congress party over its disagreement with the Supreme Court’s verdict on the abrogation of Article 370 from Jammu and Kashmir.
Shah, speaking in the Rajya Sabha, emphasized that the opposition’s disapproval of the manner in which Article 370 was removed would result in their continued electoral defeats.
During the debate on the bills pertaining to Jammu and Kashmir in the Rajya Sabha, Shah highlighted the significance of passing these bills on the day the Supreme Court upheld the abrogation of Article 370.

The two bills – the Jammu and Kashmir Reservation (Amendment) Bill, 2023 and the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation (Amendment) Bill, 2023 – were previously cleared by the Lok Sabha.
Directly targeting the Congress, Shah mentioned the party’s disagreement with the abrogation process, stressing that proper procedures were followed during the revocation of Article 370 in 2019, a stance now endorsed by the Supreme Court.
Expressing his exasperation, Shah remarked, “I cannot make them understand, I have a limit.”
He attributed separatism and the fostering of terrorism to Article 370 and urged the Congress to reconsider its position, warning that their dwindling numbers would continue unless they adapted.
Shah hinted at a contest in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, predicting a third term for Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
In response, Congress leader P Chidambaram expressed disagreement with the Supreme Court’s judgment on the abrogation process, reiterating the party’s belief that Article 370 deserved honor until it was amended in accordance with the Indian Constitution.
Chidambaram also voiced disappointment over the Supreme Court’s decision not to address the reduction of the State’s status to two Union Territories and urged the immediate restoration of full statehood for Jammu and Kashmir.
Further, Chidambaram welcomed the Supreme Court’s directive for assembly elections but urged an immediate conduct of elections rather than waiting until September 2024.
He stated the party’s intent to thoroughly scrutinize the 476-page Supreme Court judgment.
