Air India Mourns the Loss of Pilot Captain Himmanil Kumar
Air India has expressed its deep sorrow over the tragic loss of one of their pilots, Captain Himmanil Kumar, who passed away due to cardiac arrest at Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport.
Sudden Cardiac Arrest at the Airport
The incident occurred at the Air India office’s Level 3 in the airport, where Captain Kumar experienced sudden discomfort. Despite immediate CPR administered by fellow staff members and subsequent rush to a nearby hospital, he could not be revived.
Air India’s Statement on the Incident
In a statement, Air India conveyed its condolences, describing Captain Kumar as a Senior Commander who was at the Operations office as part of routine procedure. The airline clarified that he was not on active flying duty at the time of the incident and was in the process of undergoing conversion training for operating wide-body aircraft.
Medical Fitness and DGCA Report
According to the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), Captain Kumar was medically fit, with no signs of fatigue noted in their medical report.

This unfortunate event is the third of its kind in recent months involving young pilots. In August, an IndiGo pilot collapsed at Nagpur Airport and could not be saved despite immediate medical attention. Similarly, an ex-SpiceJet captain, then with Qatar Airways, passed away while traveling as a passenger from Delhi to Doha.
The aviation community, particularly Air India, is united in grief and extends heartfelt sympathies to Captain Himmanil Kumar’s family during this difficult time. The series of such incidents also raises concerns about the health and well-being of aviation professionals.
