Air India Introduces Gender-Sensitive Seat Assignment Practice for Solo Women Travelers and Mothers
Air India has issued a directive to allow solo women travelers and mothers traveling with children to choose alternative seats on their flights. The airline recommends that these passengers should preferably be given an aisle or window seat for their comfort and convenience.
Aim to Ensure Comfortable Flights for Female Passengers
The directive aims to provide female passengers with a comfortable flying experience. The airline’s internal communication, dated October 3, states that it is adopting a “gender-sensitive seat assignment practice.” This initiative extends to children traveling alone and seated in center seats. Cabin crew members are instructed to discreetly offer alternative seating options to female passengers traveling alone seated between male passengers or mothers with infants seated in center seats. Preferably, these passengers should be relocated to seats with bassinet locations, aisle seats, or window seats.
Response to Female Passengers’ Concerns
Air India’s decision comes in response to feedback from female passengers who felt uncomfortable when assigned middle seats. The airline is taking steps to avoid any potential issues or discomfort for female passengers traveling alone.
While the directive is intended to improve the travel experience for solo women travelers and mothers, it has raised concerns among some airline employees and aviation experts. Some suggest that addressing seat assignments during the booking process may be a more effective solution.
