AIFF President Initiates Meeting to Address Refereeing Concerns in Indian Football
Kalyan Chaubey, the president of the All India Football Federation (AIFF), has convened a crucial meeting with members of the Federation’s Referees Committee, Chief Refereeing Officer Trevor Kettle, and a team of Referee Assessors. The primary agenda for the meeting, scheduled on December 31, 2023, is to thoroughly evaluate the state of refereeing in the country and devise a plan for the way forward.
Refereeing decisions in football have garnered significant attention worldwide, and the recent spate of contentious calls during matches in India has amplified the discourse. Notably, the Indian Super League (ISL) match between Mumbai City FC and Mohun Bagan SG witnessed the dismissal of seven players along with several yellow cards. Additionally, East Bengal raised concerns about refereeing decisions in their encounter against FC Goa in the ISL.
Earlier this month, Chaubey emphasized the necessity for greater respect towards match officials following an incident in the Turkish Super Lig where a match had to be suspended due to violence directed at referees.
Reportedly, the AIFF President has conveyed to senior Federation officials the urgency to address the complaints raised by numerous ISL and I-League clubs regarding the supervision of matches in the ongoing season. Chaubey intends to assess the situation comprehensively and take necessary steps to advance Indian football. Hence, the meeting aims to engage with the refereeing community to pinpoint areas of improvement and implement effective strategies.
Chaubey’s initiative reflects a commitment to enhancing the quality and integrity of football officiating in India, ensuring fair play and bolstering the sport’s progression in the country.
