Afghanistan Embassy in India Ceases Operations
The Afghanistan Embassy in India has announced that it will cease its operations from October 1, 2023. The embassy cited several reasons for its decision, including a lack of support from the host government, a failure to meet expectations in serving Afghanistan’s interests, and a reduction in personnel and resources.

Key points:
- The embassy expressed regret and disappointment at having to cease its operations but stated that it made the decision after careful consideration.
- Lack of support from the host government was listed as a significant issue, hindering the embassy’s ability to carry out its duties effectively.
- The embassy also acknowledged that it had not met expectations in serving Afghanistan’s interests due to the absence of a legitimate functioning government in Kabul.
- A reduction in both personnel and resources further complicated the embassy’s ability to operate effectively.
- The embassy will continue to provide emergency consular services to Afghan citizens until the transfer of custodial authority to the host country.
The closure of the embassy comes after a period of diplomatic uncertainty and power struggles within the embassy, with reports of the Taliban attempting to appoint a new charge d’affaires.
The embassy called for the Indian government to consider its four requests outlined in a previous note and emphasized the importance of permitting the hoisting of the Afghan flag over its premises.
India has not officially recognized the Taliban-led government in Afghanistan and has been advocating for an inclusive government in Kabul that does not support terrorism.
