Afghanistan Dominates Scotland in T20 World Cup Warm-up
Key Highlights:
- Gulbadin Naib’s explosive fifty sets the tone for Afghanistan’s batting innings.
- Afghanistan’s bowlers, led by Mujeeb Ur Rahman and Rashid Khan, restrict Scotland’s chase.
- Dasun Shanaka shines with both bat and ball as Sri Lanka defeats Ireland in the other warm-up fixture.
In a confident display, Afghanistan outplayed Scotland in their T20 World Cup warm-up match in Trinidad. Gulbadin Naib’s explosive fifty propelled Afghanistan to a strong total of 178/8. Despite Scotland’s efforts, Afghanistan’s bowlers, spearheaded by Mujeeb Ur Rahman and Rashid Khan, sealed a convincing 55-run victory.
Opting to bat first, Afghanistan capitalized on good conditions, with Naib’s blistering start setting the tone. His quickfire fifty off just 21 balls laid a solid foundation, complemented by contributions from other batsmen. However, Scotland’s bowlers, led by Mark Watt and Bradley Currie, managed to contain the Afghan innings.
In response, Afghanistan’s bowlers struck early, with Mujeeb breaking the opening stand. Rashid Khan’s crucial breakthroughs further dented Scotland’s chase. Karim Janat’s impressive spell ensured Afghanistan’s dominance as Scotland fell short.
Meanwhile, in Florida, Sri Lanka faced Ireland in another warm-up fixture. Despite a shaky start with the bat, late-order contributions guided Sri Lanka to 163. Ireland’s chase showed promise initially, but Dasun Shanaka’s brilliant bowling performance, claiming 4/23, secured a comfortable 41-run victory for Sri Lanka.
As Afghanistan prepares to face Uganda in their T20 World Cup opener on June 4, the victory over Scotland bolsters their confidence. Similarly, Sri Lanka’s win over Ireland provides momentum as they gear up for their tournament campaign.
