On Sunday, the Jammu and Kashmir Anti Corruption Bureau (ACB) arrested Altaf Hussain Khan, Naib Tehsildar of Uri, after he was caught accepting a bribe of Rs 50,000 from a complainant.
The incident began when Khan demanded Rs 10 lakh from the complainant to prepare land documents and submit a report to the Tehsildar for a property purchased in Uri. The complainant had bought a 10-marla plot but was unable to get the necessary revenue documents for mutation.
Following this, he filed an application with the Tehsildar, who directed Patwari Pardeep Kumar to visit the site. Kumar then introduced the complainant to Naib Tehsildar Khan, who demanded the bribe.
Despite negotiating the bribe down to Rs 50,000 with the intervention of a local sarpanch, the complainant refused to pay and instead approached the ACB. Upon receiving the complaint, the ACB discreetly verified the allegations and set up a trap.
A special team led by a Deputy SP was formed, and Khan was caught red-handed while accepting the Rs 50,000 bribe. He was arrested on the spot, and the money was recovered in the presence of witnesses.
Further investigation revealed that Khan had previously been implicated in another corruption case.
Khan was presented before the Anti-Corruption Court in Baramulla and remanded to ten days of police custody. Investigations are ongoing, with the roles of the Patwari and Sarpanch under scrutiny.
