AAP MLA Amanatullah Khan Challenges ED Summons in Delhi High Court
AAP MLA Amanatullah Khan has approached the Delhi High Court to contest the summons issued by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in connection with a money laundering case. The ED had sought his presence during the day for an investigation linked to alleged irregularities in the Delhi Waqf Board recruitment. Justice Rekha Palli’s bench, which heard the matter, listed the plea for consideration on Thursday and refrained from passing any immediate orders. The summons were served a week ago, and the bench suggested Khan could attend for a day or send a reply, assuring it would be taken up on another date.
Constitutional Validity Challenge and Liberty Concerns
The plea filed by the AAP leader also challenges the constitutional validity of specific provisions of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act. A senior counsel for Khan expressed concerns about the invasion of his liberty if he appeared before the agency. The court acknowledged that the matter came before it in the post-lunch session after another bench recused itself from hearing it earlier during the day.
Allegations Against Amanatullah Khan and ED’s Investigation
Amanatullah Khan, who served as the chairman of the Delhi Waqf Board, faces allegations of illegally recruiting 32 individuals, violating norms and government guidelines. The ED, which previously conducted raids on Khan’s premises, contends that he acquired substantial proceeds of crime in cash through the illegal recruitment and invested those in purchasing immovable assets under the names of his associates. Recently, the ED filed a charge sheet against five entities, including three associates – Zeeshan Haider, Daud Nasir, and Jawed Imam Siddiqui – arrested by the central agency in November 2023.
