The Iranian government has announced that four of its diplomats were killed in an Israeli strike in Beirut two days ago. It has revealed the names of the diplomats, and this delay is in line with tradition here when it comes to high-level assassinations.

The reaction from the Iranian leadership has been one of deep anger that diplomats were killed on the soil of another sovereign nation, in what Iran is calling a “terrorist attack”. Iran’s UN envoy has sent a strongly worded letter to the UN Security Council, demanding the body fulfil its responsibilities, deliver justice, and ensure such incidents are never repeated. The letter called for the perpetrators to be held accountable and argued that Israel must no longer be allowed to act with impunity.

Iran views this attack as part of a broader pattern of destruction of civilian life and acts of aggression against an independent country by the US and Israel on the basis of a bunch of lies.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi also tweeted earlier, saying that the claim Iran was planning to attack the US or US forces – whether preventively or preemptively – is, in his words, “a sheer, utter lie”, and that its sole purpose is to justify what he called “Operation Epic Mistake” – a “misadventure”, he said, “engineered by Israel and paid for by ordinary Americans”.

The Kuwaiti National Guard says it has shot down eight drones as “part of the ongoing efforts to enhance security, protect vital sites, and confront any potential threats”.

Australia grants asylum to 2 more members of Iranian women’s football team

Australia’s Minister for Home Affairs Tony Burke said that two more members of Iran’s women’s football team have joined five other members in seeking asylum in Australia amid concerns for their safety should they return home.

A player and a member of the team’s support staff requested asylum late on Tuesday after five players earlier in the day were granted humanitarian visas allowing them to stay in the country.

Fears for the team’s safety in Iran emerged after Iranian state television labelled players “traitors” for refusing to sing the ⁠national anthem before their first Asia Cup match in Australia. The team later sang the anthem at other matches.

‌Iran’s ‌general prosecutor and foreign ministry spokesperson have said the players have nothing to fear when they return.

Iraqi armed group claims 31 attacks against US forces over past day

The Islamic Resistance of Iraq says it has carried out 31 attacks against US forces in Iraq and the region over the past day.

The pro-Iranian armed group said it carried out a total of 291 attacks in the past 12 days, killing and injuring several US troops.

According to the Pentagon, six US soldiers were killed in an Iranian strike on Kuwait, while another died of injuries from an Iranian attack on Saudi Arabia. It said some 140 others were wounded over 10 days.

UKMTO reports attack off UAE’s Ras al Khaimah

The UK Maritime Trade Operations says an unknown projectile has struck a container vessel some 25 nautical miles northwest of the UAE’s Ras al Khaimah.

It said the master of the vessel reported that the ship has sustained damage, but the extent of the damage is currently not known.

All crew members are safe and accounted for, it added.

Bahrain’s military has announced that its air defence systems have successfully intercepted and destroyed 106 missiles and 176 drones since the beginning of the “sinful Iranian terrorist aggressions” on the kingdom.

“The use of ballistic missiles and drones to target civilian objects and private property has constituted a flagrant violation of international humanitarian law and the United Nations Charter,” the military said in the statement.

India’s Jaishankar speaks to Iran’s Araghchi

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has held a telephone conversation with his Indian counterpart, S Jaishankar, their second call in the past week, as the impact of the US-Israel war on Iran is increasingly felt globally.

Neither side divulged details of the call, but India is currently sheltering an Iranian Navy ship that had participated in exercises hosted by the Indian Navy in February

A second Iranian Navy ship that had also joined the Indian exercises was torpedoed by a US submarine last week, just outside Sri Lankan waters, as it was trying to get back home.

The Kuwaiti armed forces have announced that air defence systems successfully intercepted a barrage of hostile drones that breached the country’s airspace.

Military officials reported that five drones were detected and four were intercepted and destroyed. The fifth crashed outside the designated threat zone.

Colonel Saud Abdulaziz al-Otaibi, in a statement, said the military is on high alert and will “ensure the preservation of [the country’s] sovereignty, security, stability, and protect its national interests”.

Iran’s police chief, Ahmed-Reza Radan, has warned on state television that protesters who take to the streets at the call of “the enemy” will be treated as enemies.
