Parliament Budget Session LIVE Updates: Jaishankar Warns Security Situation ‘Deteriorating’ Amid Iran–Israel Conflict

India’s Parliament witnessed a turbulent start to the second phase of the Budget Session as Subrahmanyam Jaishankar, the country’s External Affairs Minister, briefed lawmakers on the escalating conflict between Iran, Israel, and the United States.

Addressing the Rajya Sabha, Jaishankar said the security situation in West Asia has “deteriorated significantly” as the conflict intensifies and spreads across the region.

The minister emphasized that India has significant stakes in regional stability because millions of its citizens live and work across Gulf countries.

“We are a neighbouring region and have obvious stakes that West Asia remains stable,” Jaishankar said.

According to the government, nearly 10 million Indians live and work in Gulf nations including United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Oman, and Bahrain.

He also noted that several thousand Indians are currently residing in Iran for education and employment.

Jaishankar warned that escalating hostilities could disrupt global energy markets and supply chains that are critical to India’s economy.

The Middle East remains a key source of crude oil and gas imports for India, making any prolonged instability a major concern.

“Serious supply chain disruptions and a climate of instability are serious issues,” he told Parliament.

Jaishankar said Narendra Modi is personally monitoring the developments and has spoken with several regional leaders in an effort to ease tensions.

The Indian Prime Minister has reportedly contacted leaders of United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Oman, Jordan, Israel
and Bahrain.

India is urging all sides to reduce tensions and pursue diplomatic solutions.

The session saw heavy sloganeering by opposition parties during Jaishankar’s address, leading to chaos inside Parliament.

Meanwhile, opposition leaders have also moved a no-confidence motion against Om Birla, the Speaker of the Lok Sabha.

The motion was initially submitted during the first phase of the Budget Session with the support of 118 MPs. The All India Trinamool Congress has now extended its backing to the proposal.

Despite the growing conflict, Jaishankar stressed that diplomacy remains the only path forward.

“Dialogue and diplomacy are the only solution,” he said, while warning that the continuing escalation in West Asia is a “deep cause for concern.”

The second phase of the Parliament Budget Session began on March 9 and will continue until April 2, with several key political debates expected in the coming weeks.
