India Vs England T20 WorldCup Semi-final 2026 LIVE Updates: India Finishes on 253/7 | Could England Chase !
As the crowd roared and the players left the field, it was clear India’s batting firepower, led by Hardik Pandya’s late flourish, could make the difference in this high-stakes contest.
Hardik Pandya smashed two towering sixes off the final over bowled by Will Jacks to take India past 250 runs in a thrilling T20 World Cup semi-final at the Wankhede Stadium. Though Pandya was run out on the fifth delivery of the over, he finished with a quick 27 off 12 balls, helping India set a challenging target of 254 runs for England. The innings closed at 253/7 in their allotted 20 overs.
Sanju Samson once again anchored India’s innings, continuing the form that propelled them to the semifinals. After being reprieved on 15, Samson capitalised on England’s fielding lapses, compiling a quick-fire knock, while Ishan Kishan contributed 39 off 18 balls and Shivam Dube added 43 off 25 deliveries. Cameos from the lower order ensured India maintained momentum throughout, despite losing early wickets.
The Wankhede pitch offered true bounce, yet India’s power-hitting dominated the day. With 37 boundaries (19 sixes and 18 fours), this innings ranks as the second-highest boundary count in a T20 World Cup match, just behind Sri Lanka’s 41 against Kenya in 2007. India’s total of 253/7 is the second 250-plus total in a T20 World Cup knockout match, following West Indies’ 205/4 against Australia in the 2012 semis.
India also recorded 14 sixes in the innings, placing Pandya alongside Ishan Kishan in the tournament’s top hitters list. In fact, India leads all teams in sixes this edition, hitting 88 at an average of one every 10.8 balls, ahead of the West Indies’ 76 sixes.
England’s bowling, particularly Jofra Archer, struggled under pressure. His slow deliveries (under 128 kph) went for 72 runs in 32 balls at an economy rate of 13.50, highlighting India’s dominance against the slower pace. Fielding lapses by England allowed crucial runs, leaving them with plenty to do under knockout pressure.
The Wankhede, known for hosting record chases, has witnessed India set one of the highest totals in T20 World Cup semi-finals. The highest target ever chased at the venue is 230, achieved by England against South Africa in 2016, while the knockout record remains West Indies’ 193 in 2016. India’s imposing 254-run target now puts England under immense pressure to reach the final in Ahmedabad.
