Pakistan-Afghanistan Conflict Escalates as Islamabad Strikes Taliban Ammunition Depot

The border tensions between Pakistan and Afghanistan intensified on Monday after Pakistani forces destroyed a Taliban ammunition depot, according to state media. The move comes amid Operation Ghazab lil-Haq, launched by Islamabad last week in response to a surge of attacks by Afghan Taliban fighters along the more than 2,600-kilometer frontier.

Taliban Attacks and Pakistan’s Counter-Offensive

Afghan Taliban forces recently targeted 53 positions along the border, prompting a swift military response from Pakistan. Federal Information Minister Attaullah Tarar reported that 415 Taliban militants have been killed and more than 580 injured since the operation began.

State-run Pakistan Television (PTV) said Pakistani troops destroyed an ammunition depot in Khost, a significant blow to Taliban logistics. “Our armed forces are continuing vigorous and powerful counter-attacks against Taliban aggression,” Tarar added. Since the start of the operation, 182 Taliban posts have been destroyed and 31 captured.

Amid the clashes, Pakistan temporarily closed specific air routes in the Karachi and Lahore Flight Information Regions (FIRs) to accommodate Pakistan Air Force fighter jets. These restrictions will remain in effect daily from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. until March 31.

Regional Impact and the Pakistan-Afghanistan Conflict

The ongoing fighting underscores the persistent security challenges along the Pakistan-Afghanistan border. Efforts by Gulf countries, including Qatar and Saudi Arabia, to mediate a ceasefire have been hampered by broader regional tensions involving Iran, the U.S., and Israel.

Analysts say Operation Ghazab lil-Haq is part of Islamabad’s broader strategy to dismantle Taliban infrastructure and deter future incursions. For now, the conflict shows little sign of easing, and Pakistan continues to monitor cross-border activity closely, both militarily and diplomatically.
