PTI Objects to Exclusion of Family and Personal Doctors
Former Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan underwent an eye examination at Adiala Jail on Sunday following directions from the Supreme Court, but his party strongly criticised the process, calling it “malicious” and legally flawed.
According to reports, a five-member medical board conducted a detailed check-up that lasted about an hour. The team collected blood samples, measured his blood pressure and used its own equipment. The examination reportedly began after a delay of nearly two-and-a-half hours, with a medical report expected soon.
However, the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) rejected the procedure soon after it concluded, objecting to the absence of Khan’s family members and personal physicians.
Imran Khan Being Moved From Jail? PTI Alleges Secret Hospital Transfer Plan
In a statement, the party said the matter was not about the presence of party leadership but about the constitutional and legal right of Khan’s family to be involved in medical decisions. It argued that no informed decision could be made without his personal doctors being present during the examination.
Khan’s sister, Aleema Khanum, also questioned why authorities allegedly refused supervision by his personal doctors. Referring to reports that he might be shifted to Al-Shifa Eye Hospital in Rawalpindi, she reiterated that no treatment would be accepted without the approval of family members and his private medical team.
The controversy follows Khan’s claim before the court on February 12 that he has only 15% vision remaining in his right eye.
Supreme Court Order, Possible Hospital Shift and Protests
The medical board was formed after the Supreme Court directed authorities to assess Khan’s health condition. The court also permitted him to speak with his children before February 16.
Although officials had earlier indicated that Khan could be transferred to a hospital, no such move had taken place by Sunday afternoon. Jail authorities later dismissed reports of a transfer as rumours, clarifying that only an examination was underway and any decision about shifting him would depend on medical advice.
Khan had previously undergone a medical procedure at the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences in Islamabad on January 24. His personal doctors — Aasim Yusuf and Faisal Sultan — have since called for a comprehensive, multidisciplinary evaluation at Shifa International Hospital in Islamabad, particularly for urgent retina specialist care related to central retinal vein occlusion and severe vision loss.
Meanwhile, the Tehreek-i-Tahafuz-i-Ayin-i-Pakistan (TTAP) alliance continued its sit-in outside Parliament House for a third consecutive day, demanding that Khan be treated at a hospital approved by his personal doctors. PTI leader Asad Qaiser said the party would not compromise on Khan’s health.
The Human Rights Commission of Pakistan also expressed concern over the health of PTI-affiliated prisoners, including Khan and Yasmin Rashid, urging authorities to ensure independent medical examinations and uninterrupted access to treatment.
