Diplomatic Endeavor Amid China’s Influence
Leaders from the United States, India, Saudi Arabia, and several other nations are engaged in discussions regarding a potential infrastructure agreement centered around railways and ports, as reported by Reuters. This initiative, which could play a pivotal role in countering China’s growing influence in the Middle East, aligns with the Biden administration’s diplomatic efforts in the region.
A Strategic Mega-Deal in the Making
The Biden administration is actively pursuing a substantial agreement with Saudi Arabia, which may encompass a normalization agreement between Saudi Arabia and Israel, all before the 2024 campaign season takes precedence on Biden’s agenda. Axios, an American newsletter, first reported on these talks.
Connecting Arab Nations and India
The proposed project aims to establish an extensive network of railways, connecting Arab nations in the Levant and the Gulf. This railway network would also establish connections to India through seaports located in the Gulf, thus promoting economic and strategic ties among these regions.
Genesis of the Initiative
The idea for this ambitious endeavor emerged during discussions held over the past 18 months within the I2U2 forum. Comprising the United States, Israel, the United Arab Emirates, and India, this forum was established in late 2021 to address strategic infrastructure projects within the Middle East. It also serves as a countermeasure to the expanding influence of China in the region.
Israel’s Proposal and India’s Expertise
During the I2U2 meetings over the past year, Israel proposed the concept of connecting the region through railway networks. A significant aspect of this proposal was leveraging India’s expertise in large-scale infrastructure projects. Subsequently, the Biden administration expanded upon this idea by involving Saudi Arabia in the discussions.
