London, September 11, 2023: The UK’s National Health Service (NHS) has initiated an early rollout of its winter vaccine schedule for the most medically vulnerable individuals. This decision was made in response to concerns surrounding the new COVID variant, BA.2.86. The rollout, initially planned for early October, has been expedited to ensure the protection of high-risk groups ahead of the winter season.
Vaccination for Vulnerable Groups
Residents of older adult care homes and housebound individuals have started receiving their COVID and flu vaccinations this week. In the following week, other high-risk groups will be invited to receive their “top-up protection” against COVID and flu. The decision to bring forward the vaccine rollout was influenced by the monitoring of the BA.2.86 variant.
BA.2.86 Variant
Although the BA.2.86 variant has not been classified as a “variant of concern” by the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA), it is under close scrutiny due to its potential for mutations. This variant has a significant number of mutations in its viral genome compared to other circulating COVID-19 variants. However, limited data makes it challenging to determine its impact on transmission, severity, or immune escape properties.
Dr. Renu Bindra, an Indian-origin Incident Director for UKHSA, emphasized the need for vigilance, stating that widespread community transmission of the variant has been observed in the UK and globally. She urged eligible individuals to receive their autumn vaccines promptly.
Combating a “Twindemic”
The NHS is simultaneously launching its adult COVID and annual flu vaccination programs to address the challenges faced during the previous year’s “twindemic,” which saw the coexistence of flu and COVID cases, leading to high hospital occupancy and strain on healthcare staff. The NHS stressed the importance of top-up vaccinations, even for those previously vaccinated or infected with flu or COVID-19, as immunity diminishes over time, and the viruses undergo changes each year.
Steve Russell, NHS Director of Vaccinations and Screening, encouraged eligible individuals to come forward for vaccination, particularly those in older age groups and clinical risk categories. Dr. Mary Ramsay, Head of Immunization at UKHSA, emphasized that the vaccine continues to provide the best protection against severe illness and hospitalization from COVID-19.
