DPAP Chairman GN Azad Demands MLA Elections in Jammu and Kashmir

Ghulam Nabi Azad, Chairman of the Democratic Progressive Azad Party (DPAP), has voiced a demand for holding MLA elections in Jammu and Kashmir, emphasizing the necessity of a legislature in the union territory.

Azad’s Call for Elections in Jammu and Kashmir

Speaking about the situation in Jammu and Kashmir, Ghulam Nabi Azad highlighted the importance of conducting elections. He stated, “Last year, I may have done 500-600 public meetings. We have made a demand everywhere that an election is necessary here. Only the legislature can serve the people.” He further emphasized that while officers are capable administrators, their functioning should not replace that of elected MLAs.

Mehbooba Mufti’s Stance on Assembly Elections

Former Jammu and Kashmir chief minister and PDP Chief Mehbooba Mufti has taken a firm stance, declaring that she will not participate in Assembly elections until “Article 370 is restored” in Jammu and Kashmir. She emphasized that she would only serve as a member of the assembly under the dual constitutions of J&K and India, with two flags, as was the practice prior to the abrogation of Article 370.

Opposition Parties’ Call for Elections

Thirteen opposition parties have joined in urging the Election Commission of India to conduct elections in Jammu and Kashmir.

Amit Shah’s Stance on Jammu and Kashmir Statehood

Union Home Minister Amit Shah has indicated that the restoration of statehood to Jammu and Kashmir will be considered after the assembly polls. He made it clear that the timing of the elections is a decision for the Election Commission to make. While he did not specify the election date, he mentioned that the process of preparing the voters’ list in the union territory is nearing completion.

Background on Article 370 Revocation

On August 5, 2019, the Government of India issued a Presidential order to revoke the special status of Jammu and Kashmir by scrapping Article 370.
