Nawaz Sharif, the three-time former Prime Minister of Pakistan and the supremo of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), is on the brink of returning to his homeland after a four-year-long self-imposed exile in London. This much-anticipated return is a momentous event in Pakistan’s political landscape.
A Grand Welcome Awaits
As Nawaz Sharif arrived at Dubai International Airport, where he is set to board the “Umeed-e-Pakistan” flight back to Pakistan, he expressed his delight and optimism. He conveyed, “Today I am going to Pakistan after 4 years, and I am feeling very happy with the grace of Allah. It would be great if the situation in Pakistan was better today than it was in 2017.”
Onboard the special plane, PML-N workers jubilantly cheered their party supremo, chanting slogans of “Nawaz Sharif for Prime Minister again.” Pakistan’s Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) granted permission for the special plane to land upon arrival in the country, with Islamabad International Airport as its destination. After a brief stop in Islamabad, Sharif will head to Lahore.
A Turbulent Political Journey
Nawaz Sharif’s political journey has been fraught with challenges. The final term of his premiership was marked by upheavals, including a prolonged opposition-led blockade of Islamabad and his eventual disqualification by the Supreme Court in 2017. This court ruling followed extensive hearings related to alleged corruption during his previous terms in office, initiated in the wake of the “Panama Papers” leaks.
Despite the legal complexities and political adversities, Nawaz Sharif’s supporters have eagerly awaited his return. The PML-N is preparing for a grand welcome, with party leaders and workers converging in Lahore from across Pakistan for a monumental Minar-e-Pakistan rally.
Nawaz Sharif’s comeback carries significant implications for the evolving political landscape in Pakistan, especially as the nation prepares for the next general elections. His return is a defining moment in his political journey, and it remains to be seen how it will influence the course of Pakistani politics.
