Around 300 posts, including gazetted, non-gazetted, and multi-tasking staff, are lying vacant at Government Medical College (GMC) Doda, the government informed the Legislative Assembly on Saturday.
In reply to a question from MLA Sajad Shaheen, Health and Medical Education Department Minister Sakina Itoo said that to improve the doctor-patient ratio and enhance medical services at the secondary and tertiary levels, the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, the Government of India, under the Centrally Sponsored Scheme “Establishment of New Medical Colleges Attached with Existing Referral/District Hospitals”, sanctioned the establishment of five new medical colleges at Anantnag, Baramulla, Doda, Kathua, and Rajouri.
“Government Medical College Doda has infrastructure and staff in place to function smoothly. However, as with any new medical college, there is room for further improvement. Considerable efforts have been made to enhance the infrastructure at GMC Doda. Regarding staff, all vacant faculty posts have been referred to the JKPSC for advertisement and selection of suitable candidates. Additionally, faculty is being engaged on an academic arrangement basis under SO 364 of 2020, dated 27.11.2020, to meet any shortfall. Consultants and senior consultants from the Health Gazetted Services are also being deputed to GMC Doda on standard terms and conditions to utilise their services in various departments. Furthermore, recruitment for vacant non-gazetted posts at GMC Doda is under consideration,” she said.
“The cost of civil works at GMC Doda has been revised from Rs 139 crore to Rs 164.90 crore with prior approval from the Administrative Council via Government Order No. 499-JK(HME) of 2024, dated 05-08-2024, enabling the completion of pending work at the college. The balance cost of the project is being provided under the Capex Budget, as the full central share has already been released by the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, Government of India. During the current financial year, Rs 9.50 crore has been earmarked under the Capex Budget 2024-25, out of which Rs 7.60 crore has been released and Rs 1.65 crore incurred,” Itoo said.
She stated that 123 gazetted posts, 126 non-gazetted posts, and 47 multi-tasking staff positions are currently vacant at the hospital. Additionally, GMC Doda has two functional CT scan machines and one functional Fibroscan machine (Echosens 630) in AH, but MRI facilities are unavailable due to project cost escalation.
“MD/PG/MD/MS courses are not currently offered at GMC Doda. However, the institution intends to introduce PG/MD/MS courses in broad specialities from the academic year 2027-28. Moreover, DNB courses are available in the disciplines of Medicine, Surgery, Obstetrics & Gynaecology, Paediatrics, and Orthopaedics at GMC Doda,” Itoo added. (KNO)
