    Jammu Kashmir Assembly Approves Grants for Education, Health, Welfare Sectors

    The Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly on Wednesday passed grants amounting to Rs 1201489.52 lakh for the School Education Department, Rs 881370.63 lakh for Health and Medical Education, Rs 450428.15 lakh for Social Welfare, and Rs 219340.00 lakh for Higher Education following a two-day discussion.

    Minister for Health and Medical Education, Social Welfare, and Education, Sakeena Itoo, concluded the debate, acknowledging the legislators’ inputs and assuring their implementation where feasible. She praised Chief Minister Omar Abdullah for making exceptional budgetary provisions for education despite financial constraints.

    Highlighting the achievements of the education sector, Itoo noted that Jammu and Kashmir offers free education up to the university level. She announced infrastructure investments of Rs 739 crore under various schemes, the establishment of smart classrooms, and ICT labs, as well as enhanced facilities for remote and migratory students.

    In the health sector, the minister outlined significant infrastructure developments, including the expansion of AIIMS Kashmir, new maternal and child care hospitals, and critical care units. She also reported advancements in medical education, including operationalising homeopathic medical colleges and the introduction of specialised facilities like cath labs.

    Regarding social welfare, Itoo informed the House of pension revisions based on age categories, increased scholarships for SC students, and improvements in Anganwadi Centres under the Poshan Tracker initiative. She also mentioned the enhancement of early childhood education through upgraded Bal-Vidyalayas.

    The grants were passed through a voice vote, with legislators withdrawing cut motions following the minister’s assurances.
