A group of 20 dedicated mountaineers from the National Institute of Mountaineering and Adventure Sports (NIMAS) in Arunachal Pradesh have achieved an extraordinary feat that showcases their unwavering patriotism and love for adventure. Under the banner of “Har Shikhar Tiranga” mission, they embarked on a remarkable journey to conquer the highest points in each Indian state, proudly hoisting the national flag on top of every peak they conquered.
A Tribute to India’s Independence: Celebrating Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav with G20 Presidency
This unique and audacious mission was undertaken as a part of the “Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav,” which commemorates the 75th year of Indian independence and aligns with India’s G20 presidency. The mountaineers’ determination to scale these towering heights while carrying the tricolor flag symbolizes their commitment to the spirit of freedom and unity.

Facing Nature’s Wrath: Surviving a Terrifying Cloudburst
Throughout this adventurous journey, these brave mountaineers faced numerous challenges, but none as terrifying as the night of October 3. Having successfully climbed Mt Jongsong in Sikkim just the previous day, the team suddenly found themselves in grave danger when a sudden cloudburst triggered flash floods. “We had hardly sighed in relief of completing our mission when around 10 pm the first waters came gushing in. Our team managed to get out with our stuff in 10 minutes, and being mountaineers, our first instinct took us up the hills. And that window of 10 minutes and running up to the hills rather than down saved us, I think,” said Colonel Ranveer Singh Jamwal, the team leader.
Journey Through India’s Varied Landscapes: Overcoming Obstacles on the Way
Their journey took them across the length and breadth of India, and along the way, the team encountered diverse challenges. These included the unavailability of transportation, poor road conditions in remote areas, security issues in Maoist-affected regions, and language barriers while interacting with local communities. Despite these hurdles, their unwavering determination and commitment to their mission propelled them forward.
India’s Unnamed Peaks: A Startling Discovery
In their pursuit of hoisting the national flag atop each state’s highest peak, the mountaineers made an intriguing discovery. They found that many of these lofty summits remain unnamed, like the highest point in Punjab, which is located in the Naina Devi Range. This mission not only celebrated India’s geographical diversity but also shed light on the need to acknowledge and name its less-explored natural wonders.
The “Har Shikhar Tiranga” mission, which commenced on October 16 last year in Arunachal Pradesh, covered an astounding 30,000 kilometers, making it a truly one-of-a-kind adventure in the history of the nation. The mountaineers’ resilience, passion, and dedication have not only left a lasting mark on the Indian landscape but have also inspired a sense of unity and adventure among the citizens of this incredible country.
