Due to landslides in Ramban district, the Jammu-Srinagar national highway was temporarily shut down for traffic on a Tuesday, stranding more than 200 vehicles. The region experienced snowfall in high-altitude zones and continuous rains in the plains of the Jammu area for the second day in a row, leading to the onset of cold wave conditions.

This vital 270-kilometer highway serves as the sole all-weather road connecting Kashmir to the rest of the country. However, landslides induced by heavy rainfall at Dalwas and Mehad in the Cafeteria Morh region and rockfall in the Trishul Morh area of Ramban district obstructed its passage. Authorities are currently working diligently to clear the landslide debris, but persistent heavy rainfall is making the task challenging.

Similarly, the Mughal road, which links Shopian in the Kashmir Valley to Poonch, has been closed to traffic for the second consecutive day due to substantial snowfall in the Pir ki Gali area.

Various areas, including Guldanda, Chatergalla Pass in Bhaderwah (Doda), Mohu Mangat (Ramban), Pir Ki Gali (Poonch), Wardwan (Kishtwar), and the Pir Panjal hills, have received significant snowfall.

In response to the adverse weather conditions, the local administration has taken the precautionary step of closing schools in Ramban district. A spokesperson announced, “In light of the continuous rains since Monday, all schools up to the higher secondary level in Ramban shall remain closed today.” However, any scheduled exams will proceed as planned.

The weather forecast suggests the possibility of ongoing light rain and snow in some areas. Officials have cautioned residents to steer clear of areas prone to landslides and areas with overflowing drains.
