Srinagar, Aug 18 (KNO): In a significant political move, former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad is reportedly considering a return to the Congress party ahead of the upcoming assembly elections in the region.
Sources close to Azad have revealed that senior Congress leaders, including members of the Gandhi family, have reached out to Azad in an effort to mend relations and bring him back to the party.
Ghulam Nabi Azad, who left the Congress in August 2022 due to growing differences, subsequently founded the Democratic Progressive Alliance Party (DPAP) with several other disillusioned Congress leaders from Jammu and Kashmir.
The departure of such a prominent leader was seen as a significant blow to the Congress in the region.
According to a close associate of Azad, ongoing deliberations are focused on addressing the grievances that led to his departure. The source noted that the Congress party has already started implementing some of the changes Azad had suggested before his exit, signaling a willingness to reconcile.
“The party is taking steps that Azad proposed two years ago, possibly to encourage his return,” the associate said.
The potential reconciliation comes at a critical time, with the Election Commission of India recently announcing the schedule for assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir, set to begin on September 18.
On Saturday, Taj Mohi-Ud-Din, a senior leader and founding member of DPAP, announced his decision to return to Congress, further fueling speculation about Azad’s next move.
Azad’s final decision is expected in the coming days as discussions continue between him and the Congress leadership.
