7.0 magnitude Earthquake Strikes Near Russian Naval Base; Tsunami Warning Issued
Key Highlights:
- A 7.0 magnitude earthquake hit near Russia’s eastern coast on Sunday.
- No immediate reports of damage or injuries were reported by authorities.
- Tsunami warning issued and later lifted; minor sea fluctuations expected.
Early Sunday, a powerful earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 7.0 rattled the far eastern coast of Russia, near a major naval base. The earthquake’s epicenter was located approximately 63 miles (102 kilometers) east of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, according to the US Geological Survey. The tremor struck 18 miles (29 kilometers) below the Earth’s surface.
Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, a port city of over 181,000 residents, is nestled among volcanoes and lies across a bay from a significant Russian submarine base.
The city experienced the forceful jolts early Sunday morning, but there were no immediate reports of damage or injuries, as confirmed by local authorities.
Following the earthquake, the US National Weather Service’s Pacific Tsunami Warning Center in Honolulu initially issued a tsunami warning for coasts within 300 miles (480 kilometers) of the epicenter.
However, this warning was later lifted, with officials stating that the immediate tsunami threat had subsided. Despite this, authorities cautioned that minor sea level fluctuations could still occur in some coastal areas near the earthquake’s origin for several hours.
The affected region, known for its seismic activity due to its position along the Pacific Ring of Fire, has experienced significant earthquakes in the past.
Sunday’s earthquake serves as a reminder of the persistent geological risks faced by those living in this part of the world.
Local emergency services remain on alert as they continue to monitor the situation closely. Residents are advised to stay informed of any updates and take necessary precautions as the region recovers from this seismic event.
