NCDC Urges Enhanced Disaster Management Following Devastating Wayanad Landslides
Srinagar (J&K): In a recent meeting, core committee members of the National Child Development Council (NCDC) have expressed shock and sorrow over the tragic Wayanad landslides, which have resulted in over 400 fatalities and left more than 150 individuals missing. The landslides, triggered by heavy rains, struck several villages in Wayanad district, Kerala, on July 30, 2024.
The NCDC members extended their heartfelt condolences to the families, who lost their dear ones in this catastrophic event, and emphasized the urgent need for improved disaster management strategies. They emphasized the importance of adopting scientific approaches to mitigate such calamities, suggesting that incorporating foreign technologies and effective preventative measures could significantly reduce the impact of disasters.
A senior NCDC member proposed the integration of a Disaster Management curriculum into school syllabuses, advocating for comprehensive training programs to better prepare people for such emergencies. The council members also commended the Indian Army for its crucial role in the ongoing rescue operations.
The NCDC members further highlighted the need for heightened awareness and precautionary measures to prevent tragedies of this scale. They suggested that avoiding construction in landslide-prone areas could be an effective strategy to safeguard lives and properties.
As of Wednesday, rescue teams continue to search for the missing individuals, with local residents and families of the missing playing an integral role in the efforts. The Kerala government has mobilized all available resources to aid in the search and rescue operations.
