Climate scientist and former mayor of Mexico City, Claudia Sheinbaum, has been elected as Mexico’s first female and Jewish President, according to Politico. Sheinbaum, 61, received approximately 58% of the vote, based on preliminary results from the Mexican electoral office. Her main opposition candidate, Xochitl Galvez, supported by a coalition of the National Action Party (PAN), Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI), and Democratic Revolution Party (PRD), garnered between 26.6% and 28.6%. Jorge Alvarez Maynez of the Citizens’ Movement received between 9.9% and 10.8%.
The election saw a participation rate between 58.9% and 61.7% of the nearly 100 million eligible voters, according to CNN. Expressing gratitude to her supporters, Sheinbaum called her election a historical moment, emphasizing the diversity and democracy of Mexico. “For the first time in 200 years of the Republic, I will become the first woman president of Mexico,” she stated. Sheinbaum also highlighted the need for peace and harmony to build a fair and prosperous Mexico, acknowledging that not all Mexicans fully agree with her project.
Sheinbaum’s party, Morena, is projected to secure a legislative majority, which would enable her to pursue constitutional changes that eluded her predecessor, President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, Politico reported. Sheinbaum is a close ally of Lopez Obrador, who could not run for re-election after his six-year term. Lopez Obrador congratulated Sheinbaum, noting that she might have received the most votes in Mexico’s history.
The election also involved filling over 20,000 political positions, including all seats in the lower house, the Senate, and various regional and municipal offices. Despite extensive security measures, including deploying thousands of soldiers, the election day was marred by violence. A town council candidate was shot to death hours before the election, and a man was kidnapped while voting at a polling station.
